Making a Name: Third Quarter

(Mathis)

Duddy’s business was booming. He made a good profit with his movies and even started making commercials on television on TV for his movies. Meanwhile, Duddy’s uncle, Benjy, was getting quite sick and nothing really went well for him. His wife, Ida, wanted a divorce, and he developed stomach cancer. Even though Ida was living with the other man in New York, Duddy and his family still judged she deserved to know about Benjy's condition, and she eventually came back to Canada with Duddy. On their way back, Ida told Duddy many stories about how Benjy treated her, which didn’t help the opinion Duddy already had of his uncle. After bringing back Ida, he went to see Benjy, where he confronted him about the way he treated him and Ida. While arguing, Benjy realized that Duddy was the only one in the family who came to see him without asking for something, which made him change his way of viewing his nephew. Sometime later, Virgil got into an accident. He fractured his spine, making him paraplegic. Yvette told Duddy that this accident was his fault because he knew what could happen with Virgil's epileptic condition. Yvette stopped seeing Duddy and stopped working for him to take care of Virgil in Ste.Agathe. Duddy had now to do Virgil's job, and he had to hire a new secretary. He let himself go more and more. To had to all of this, Benjy finally died of his cancer, and he let a letter for Duddy, but he never opened it. After all of this, Duddy started having nightmares about Yvette being with another man and his own death. For days, all he did was sleeping. Unable to pay bills and take care of himself, he eventually declared bankruptcy. He later received a letter from Virgil saying that Yvette missed him. He then comes to see them, and he finally started feeling better, so did Yvette. He finally found the strength to read Benjy's letter. It said that Duddy inherited a house on Mount Royal. While on a date with Yvette, they saw a newspaper saying that Dingleman was linked with Dope smuggling and Duddy decided he had to meet him.
